Glass, bubbles and delicate, translucent fabrics were all employed within Italian Renaissance art as a metaphor or philosophical allegory for the immaculate conception, for light passes through these objects without causing harm. In this vein, Botticelli’s Primavera and The Birth of Venus were referenced, in tandem with strings and chains of pearls, denoting purity, preciousness and truth. The immediate scene around the protagonist is a Renaissance still life; again, translucent liquids and glass objects are employed for their symbolism, while citrus (known as ‘medicinal apples’) are abandoned half-peeled. Small creatures, such as wasps and snails, act as symbols of the brevity and impermanence of life. Bordered by a satin ribbon, the scene is laid within a fairytale landscape, where pastel palaces and elegant spires extend into the hazy skies from atop the lofty mountains. Within a scene largely inspired by The Arrival in Bethlehem by Master LC, we find mythological or fantasy buildings such as the Tower of Babel (Bruegel The Elder), juxtaposed with real architecture from Medici Florence and its surroundings, such as The Tower of Pisa, the Basilica di Santa Croce, and the Battistero di San Giovanni. Our feline protagonist lounges in the foreground, reclining like Titian’s Venus D’Urbino, the languid, skyward gaze a common feature of Renaissance portraiture. Late in 1487, the sultan of Egypt presented a female giraffe to Lorenzo de' Medici, which appears within the landscape of this design preparing for the carnival, with several other impressive but nonindigenous creatures. Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights also contained a giraffe, an elephant and a leopard, alongside anachronous plants, red fruits, and flowers, here in the form of white tulips, cherries and pomegranate, symbolising the blood and flesh of Christ and illustrated in the fashion of Schreiber’s illuminated manuscripts. During the Renaissance, the columbine was primarily a Christian symbol, particularly associated with the Holy Spirit due to its dove-like appearance. Inspired by Orso, the unrecognised equestrian star of the famous jousting tournament held by Lorenzo di Medici in 1469, the stark, strong motif of this design was largely influenced by the disarming boldness and architectural simplicity of Antonio Pisanello’s studies of horse heads in his famed Codex Vallardi, alongside equestrian works by Dürer, and various frescoes and masterpieces of the Renaissance era. The armorial elements, such as the sabaton shoe atop the steed’s back, the gauntlet below, and the candy-striped jousting pole all reference historical examples from the Renaissance, while the horse’s striped and embellished carnival attire was inspired by a German illustrated tournament book of the era. The inclusion of sheer fabric is an allusion to Renaissance artwork and symbolism, a juxtaposition of strength and delicacy.
