The Scrimshaw Skeleton Tie-Neck Silk Blouse

The Tie-Neck Silk Blouse is made in London from our beautiful silk twill, offering a loose and elegant fit while displaying an exquisite placement print. Providing a multitude of styling options, the blouse features a flowing, double-sided scarf integrated into the back neckline, which can be tied, draped, or worn loose; maximum versatility within one garment. The sleeves are tapered and fitted at the wrist with functional button cuffs, while the concealed button placket features delicate metal buttons beneath. The garment is French seamed throughout.

The Scrimshaw Skeleton Tie-Neck Silk Blouse draws inspiration from a wide range of sources. The central motif was first inspired by the poem, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, through both water-weary descriptions and moral significance; a caution to respect our natural world. A primary reference for this design were the skulls and bones of American fraternal art, in which skeleton symbols are seen not as morbid, but as an encouragement for virtuous living and reverence for life, including the skeletal coral. They serve as beautiful and poignant reminders to protect our natural world. This print also highlights the plight of whales in the 19th century; The carved whale teeth were inspired by Susan’s Teeth, a famous set of scrimshaw teeth inscribed by a whaler from Nantucket, while the carved bone whales were a common form of folk art for sailors of the era.
