As the cacophony of rally cries fades, the palace falls silent. No clanging of armour, no flurry of footsteps outside her door. In the southern tower of the Mysore fortress, the leopard queen lounges in her opulent boudoir; her embroidered silks and painted screens providing a visual feast of colour and storytelling.
A shaft of sunlight glances through the room, and she turns to gaze out over the kingdom. Her green eyes focus as her master, the sultan, strides confidently across the vista, leading his army into battle. Her heart yearns to join him, but she knows she is too treasured to lose. Unable to bear the silence any longer, she summons the two Sacred Ibis from their cage to distract her by playing the songs of her past; songs which evoke memories of happier times, when she would play in the palace gardens, frolicking in the flowers and rolling in the cool grass with her master.
Soon, she will tire of the Ibis’ playing, and they must keep their wits about them, or risk the gruesome fate of so many players before them.
