Chasing The Pearl Silk Marocain Dress

This simple, straight-cut dress is made in London from sand-washed silk crepe Marocain. This flattering silk has a thick and buttery feel with a dusky, matte finish. It features an elevated yet soft collar at the neckline, long sleeves and concealed side-seam pockets, allowing the subtle print to take centre stage. It fastens with a concealed zip at the centre back, and features a trailing, heritage grosgrain ribbon which flows behind when worn. The dress is finished with hand-felled hems and is French-seamed throughout. The garment features an exquisite placement print design, featuring Sabina’s original pencil rendering.

Notes on the monochrome print:

Chinese Song Dynasty critics and theorists formulated a rhetoric regarding the superiority of ink monochrome to colourful painting. These arguments take on a moralistic tone, suggesting that colourful painting is intended to please the eye and increase the attractiveness of the work, making it thus meretricious; Ink monochrome reveals the inner structure of the subject depicted instead of only the outer appearance, and so forth.

The aim of traditional Chinese animal painting was to capture not only the outer appearance of a subject but the inner essence as well – its energy, life force, and spirit. To accomplish this often meant to reject the use of colour, which would serve only as a distraction. This was often referred to as ‘white painting’, the most famous of which is arguably ‘Night Shining White’ by Han Gan (742-756).
